The Wiz: I'm a Mean Ole Lion #TBT
Well many of you may recognize that it was a broadway play featuring Stephanie Mills, Theresa Merritt, as well as Ted Ross in the original broadway cast. It was adapted for the screen by Quincy Jones, Ashford & Simpson, Joel Schumacher, and Luther Vandross from the Frank L. Baum story series "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." This adaptation was unique in that it featured an all African American cast.
I've had the pleasure of seeing this live in my youth with Peabo Bryson as "The Wiz," CeCe Peniston as "Glinda the Good," and Tasha Scott as "Dorothy." My favorite memory of the live show is Grace Jones as "Evilene."
One of my favorite scenes would have to be with the Lion's introduction. Although he deemed himself without courage, he did muster the courage to disco his mane to the then trio of Dorothy, Tinman, and Scarecrow that "I'm a Mean Ole Lion." He gave me straight up drag's performance with those platform shoes and that man that was curled for the GAWDS!!!!
Enjoy Ted Ross as "The Lion," in the "Wiz."
